N0204 / N2200 FAQ
English
1. Before using the NAS, you have to install one or two HDD and then run Thecus Smart Utility to initiate the RAID. The Thecus Smart Utility is included in the CD title came with the NAS; or visit Thecus website to download the latest version.
2. To make the N0204 and N2200 initiated smoothly, we recommend just one IP address is assigned to the computer which running the Thecus Smart Utility. It means, in case there are two network interfaces (one motherboard on-board NIC plus one add-on NIC card), temporarily disable one of them. In addition, do not assign two IP addresses to the NIC please. To check it out, execute "ipconfig /all" under Windows DOS prompt to see if there is more than one IP address assigned.
3. Before the RAID initialized by Thecus Smart Utility, IE or FireFox browsers cannot browse the admin web interface because the HTTP service has not enabled yet.
4. The default IP address of N0204 and N2200 will be assigned by the DHCP server. In case there is no available DHCP server in local network, it would be 192.168.1.100.
5. When initiate the NAS and RAID the first time, Thecus Smart Utility will do the following steps.
1) Initiate the RAID
2) Upload the NAS firmware onto the RAID
The NAS firmware file is placed in client computer while installing Smart Utility, such as:
C:\Program Files\Thecus\Thecus Smart Utility\firmware_N0204
C:\Program Files\Thecus\Thecus Smart Utility\firmware_N2200
In case you see "ROM file not found", please check if above folder includes correct firmware file and with correct file name.
6. Please use brand new or entirely empty HDD. In case the installed HDD contain partition(s) or data, Thecus Smart Utility v1.00.10 will fail to install NAS firmware. It is a design to protect customer's data from erased by careless operation. However, since v1.00.11, Thecus Smart Utility will let administrator decide if he or she want to erase the whole HDD content to initiate the RAID.
7. When Thecus Smart Utility runs, please note firewall software does not block its activity; otherwise it will not discover any NAS. In addition, we recommend running the Thecus Smart Utility in a computer with Ethernet network; a wireless network may disconnect easily and interrupt the RAID initiation. Since Thecus Smart Utility 1.00.11, the install log exists in the program folder, such as:
C:\Program Files\Thecus\Thecus Smart Utility\log.txt
In case the Smart Utility could not discover the NAS, or fails to complete the RAID initiation, please submit the log file to Thecus support team at http://esupport.thecus.com/support/
8. Thecus Smart Utility uses the same port with Thecus Setup Utility. The former is for N0204 and N2200, and the latter is for other Thecus NAS products. So please do not run both utilities at the same time to avoid port conflict.
9. N0204 and N2200 support USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices; however, please note the USB port at the back panel of N0204 supports USB 1.1 only.
10. N0204 will not beep to alarm critical events, so NAS user has to configure E-mail notification to be aware of the events.
中文
C:\Program Files\Thecus\Thecus Smart Utility\firmware_N0204
C:\Program Files\Thecus\Thecus Smart Utility\firmware_N2200
C:\Program Files\Thecus\Thecus Smart Utility\log.txt
Mac OS Limitations
Mac OS Limitations (Firmware 3.04.03)
- When using Mac OS X (post 10.2 with AppleTalk) without SMB, do not use Japanese characters in folder or file names to prevent errors accessing the data over a network.
- Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X can not see files on the network with names made up of over 32 characters.
- Mac OS 8.x/9.x only supports local character encoding on file names (without Unicode support).
- Occasionally, when a file is accessed by a Mac OS computer within a shared folder, an information file will be created in the same folder. If the file is then deleted by a Windows OS computer, the original file may no longer be accessible by Mac OS computers.
- The following characters are not allowed to be included in the name used for a file or shared folder when using Mac OS (AppleTalk) devices.
- Writing a file larger than 2 GB is not allowed by MAC OS-9.

If RAID degraded how should I do?
If RAID degraded how should I do?
If we created RAID 5 from HDD1, 2, 3 & 4, but system warning about RAID degraded, please check following steps:
- Check from NAS ADMIN WEB page -> STORAGE -> RAID MANAGEMENT page, to check which HDD out of RAID. The "DISKS USED" file would show which RAID HDD existed in the RAID, as like number "1, 2, 3" means HDD1 HDD2 & HDD3 existed the RAID.
- From item 0 know it is a RAID5 volume form HDD1~4, but "RAID MANAGEMENT"-> "DISKS USED" know HDD1~3 exited but HDD4 out of RAID.
- We need check this HDD health status first, check from NAS ADMIN WEB page -> STORAGE -> DISK INFORMATION.
3-1. If HDD4 missing, perhaps this HDD is damaged, here recommend replace a health HDD join back to RAID. (Thecus provide HDD only; if you need HDD RMA service please consult where you purchase this HDD or HDD manufacturer directly.)
3-2. If HDD4 show on the screen, please click to choose HDD4 and check SMART icon to check HDD health status, normally the "Reallocated Sector Count" "Current Pending Sector" & "End-to-End error" should be 0. (Check the HDD SMART is enough and you have no necessary to do "DETECT BAD BLOCK" or "BAD BLOCK SCAN") We recommend replace HDD if above 3 item not stay at 0, because a health HDD should have no this value, once any number occurred means HDD have something wrong and should going to worst in the further. (Each HDD have difference reability, we STRONG recommend choose enterprise HDD)
3-3. If HDD4 show on the screen, please click to choose HDD4 and check SMART icon to check HDD health status, and "Reallocated Sector Count" "Current Pending Sector" & "End-to-End error" stay at 0, means HDD should be health, perhaps someone shaking, loosen or remove this HDD, after check installation and we could add this HDD back to RAID.
- If went to add HDD into a DEGRADED RAID, please check from NAS ADMIN WEB page -> STORAGE -> RAID MANAGEMENT page -> Choose the RAID volume -> EDIT -> check the "SPARE" or "HOT SPARE" box which HDD you went join into RAID volume for rebuilding -> APPLY for RAID rebuilding. During RAID rebuilding NAS and HDD would be busy and response slow, even we could access NAS for some basic file IO, but it is NOT recommended doing this. Here recommend choose holiday or non-business hour for RAID rebuilding. Also please configure EMAIL NOTIFICATION before and don't stay at RAID MANAGEMENT page, in reason this page would check RAID status every few second, thus EMAIL notification would mail to you while RAID rebuild completed.
*Note1: If you can't get EMAIL notification or test mail from GMAIL, please check following FAQ:

Additional information for user reference,
1. The LCM shows “Self testing” means the LCM is power on and it’s waiting OS(Operation System) to send text
2. Thecus NAS is similar structure as normal x86 PC, therefore we are able to identify this status via normal PC diagnostic method. We just need to confirm the BIOS ready beep sound since NAS is power on in 10~20 seconds. If everything (CPU, DOM, RAM etc.) is installed correctly, but no BIOS ready beep sound and we suspect the motherboard has some issues and need to swap or require RMA Service.
Furthermore, some of Thecus NAS are with video output (VGA or HDMI). User could confirm the BIOS ready beep sound first. In addition, user is able to connect the rear video output port with a monitor, too. If the output shows system successfully operation, then perhaps the NAS LCD display defect and require RMA Service.
If the output shows abnormal, please
1. Re-plug DOM, RAM, and CPU etc. to confirm whether the self testing status is solved
2. If re-plug still unable to solve this problem, please take a screenshot for your current display and provide this screen for Thecus Support Team reference (support@thecus.com). OR simply submit a ticket at Thecus eSupport. (http://esupport.thecus.com/support/index.php?_m=tickets&_a=submit)
